In 1900, Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frederic Clay Bartlett, charter members of the Cliff Dwellers, teamed up on the extraordinary reconstruction of Second Presbyterian Church after a devastating fire almost entirely destroyed the James Renwick Jr. gothic revival interiors.

The duo re-envisioned the church in the English Arts and Crafts style. Drawing from Shaw’s well-timed trip to England the year of the fire and the incredibly talented Chicago designers and craftspeople participating in the burgeoning local progressive Arts and Crafts movement, the reconstructed church stands today as a masterpiece of design.

Nate Lielasus, AIA, architect and President of the Board of Friends of Historic Second Church, will discuss the rebuilding of Second Presbyterian Church and current efforts by Friends of Historic Church to protect its artistic treasures.
