Hamlin Garland: Tending Trails
Join Kuirt Meyer, President of the Hamlin Garland Society, as he presents a lecture on June 4th providing an overview of Garland’s diverse club-related activities.
Garland often employed the term “Trails” in his books, “The Long Trail,” “Trail Makers of the Middle Border,” “Joys of the Trail,” etc. In this presentation, Meyer focuses on the dozens of clubs Garland either founded, like the Cliff Dwellers, or those that consumed much of his time and energy. Remarks will include the challenges Garland faced during his years of involvement with the Cliff Dwellers, which should be of considerable interest to current members.
Meyer has presented on Garland throughout the “Middle Border” states (a classic Garland term) as well as in California, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. He lives in North Iowa, some 15 miles from where the Garland family lived during Hamlin’s boyhood years.
