After depression and World War II, America emerged the dominant nation. Unparalleled growth and prosperity followed for a burgeoning middle class, unprecedented in size. Veterans on the GI bill went to college, married sweethearts, moved to new suburbs, and birthed lots of babies. The late 1940’s, 50’s, and early 60’s were about abundance, conformity, and gradual pushback. As the 60’s progressed, this monolith fractured. The epoch ended in Vietnam, 70’s oil-supply shocks, and stagflation.
A bona fide Baby Boomer, architect, art commentator, and author Joseph Madda lived through these times, including owning and living in four different Mid-Century Modern homes in Los Angeles and Chicago for over forty years.
