SUMMARY:Theatre Club - Steppenwolf's production of TopDog/UnderDog
DESCRIPTION:The next Theatre Club get-together takes us to the Steppenwolf Theatre on Wednesday\, October 28th for the Theatre in Chicago’s “Highly Recommended” production of:\nTOPDOG/UNDERDOG\n7:30 pm  Steppenwolf Theatre\n\n\nBrothers Lincoln and Booth\, named in jest\, are two Black men living in America just trying to get by. Lincoln dresses like his namesake\, reenacting his assassination for money and laughs. Booth stays stuck in their apartment\, working tirelessly on his three-card hustle. Sibling rivalry and a lifetime of resentment come to a head in this fast-paced and ferocious thrill ride from Suzan-Lori Parks. The deck is stacked with a Tony Award-winning director\, a Pulitzer Prize-winning script and a tour-de-force showdown for ensemble members Glenn Davis and Namir Smallwood.\n\nWe plan to meet at the Club for dinner about 5:30 and will Uber to the theater for the 7:30 curtain. Details to be confirmed.\n\nEstimated ticket cost per person is approximately $89\, depending upon the number of attendees and if we can get a group discount. There will be a slight additional charge for the Uber. Let us know if you’ll be joining the group for dinner at the club. We will make the dinner reservations with the Cliff Dwellers\, so no need to do so yourself.\n\nContact Rick Frendt to reserve a ticket:\nrfrendt@comcast.net  or text/call 708-359-0806\n\nPLEASE NOTE\, when you respond that you plan to attend a show\, we purchase tickets out of pocket at that time and they are not refundable (the Club does not buy the tickets).

SUMMARY:Performance: "Forest of Signs"
DESCRIPTION:Artist in Residence Ben Zucker Presents “Forest of Signs”\nForest of Signs is a quartet performing new original music by Ben Zucker where complexity\, intuition\, and exploration meet and flourish. The unusual instrumentation of electric guitar\, piano\, violin\, and vibraphone is matched by the players’ experience across chamber music\, jazz\, and experimental improvisation. The pieces are never the same twice but are always full of intriguing\, enticing combinations of dissonance\, groove\, and space. \nBen Zucker (Cliff Dwellers AIR 2026-2027) is an experimental composer and performer\, interested in music’s unique capacities to model systems of change through a rigorous\, dynamic play of contemplation and visceral immersion in sonic extremes. Starting from a background in jazz and theater\, this speculation now regularly mixes in explorations of philosophy\, improvisation\, ambience\, alternative notations\, juxtapositions\, and protocols. His practice includes “stirring compositions…built on a lifetime of musical curiosity” (Chicago Reader)\, and performances on vibraphone\, brass\, keys\, voice\, and electronics across styles. \nThe Quartet also features: Andrew Sudhibhasilp\, Billie Howard\, and Mabel Kwan. \n5 pm – Doors Open\n6 pm – Dinner\n7 pm – Program \n$60 Members\n$70 Invited Guests\n$20 Program Only \nreservations@cliff-chicago.org\n312-882-8080

SUMMARY:Architecture Lecture: Shaw\, Second Presbyterian and the Chicago Arts and Crafts Movement
DESCRIPTION:In 1900\, Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frederic Clay Bartlett\, charter members of the Cliff Dwellers\, teamed up on the extraordinary reconstruction of Second Presbyterian Church after a devastating fire almost entirely destroyed the James Renwick Jr. gothic revival interiors. \nThe duo re-envisioned the church in the English Arts and Crafts style. Drawing from Shaw’s well-timed trip to England the year of the fire and the incredibly talented Chicago designers and craftspeople participating in the burgeoning local progressive Arts and Crafts movement\, the reconstructed church stands today as a masterpiece of design. \nNate Lielasus\, AIA\, architect and President of the Board of Friends of Historic Second Church\, will discuss the rebuilding of Second Presbyterian Church and current efforts by Friends of Historic Church to protect its artistic treasures. \n5 pm – Doors Open & Cocktails\n6 pm – Buffet Dinner\n7 pm – Program \nDinner and Program $56\nProgram Only $10 \nreservations@cliff-chicago.org\n312-882-8080 \n

SUMMARY:The Architectural Table: The Obama Presidential Center as an Urban Catalyst
DESCRIPTION:The Obama Presidential Center as an Urban Catalyst\nThe Obama Presidential Center (OPC) is the most significant development project in Chicago in the last 10 years. Its iconic form has been much scrutinized and debated\, but what of its role as an urban catalyst for Woodlawn and Hyde Park? \nThe November Architecture Table will address this question. Among the topics that will be discussed include: the role of iconic architecture as a neighborhood landmark; the Center’s economic impact on adjacent neighborhoods; the redesign of Jackson Park; and transportation impacts in and around the Center. We also welcome other topics and questions that attendees may have. \nAll participants are urged to visit the OPC site and walk the grounds prior to the discussion. Walking the site is FREE and requires no reservations. Please note: We will not be discussing the interior of any buildings or exhibits\, so there is no need to access any of the buildings. \nOPC Location and Hours\n6001 S. Stony Island Ave.\, Chicago\nCampus Grounds: Monday – Sunday 6 a.m.- 9 p.m. \nRSVP or call 312-922-8080.\nLet us know if you’re joining us for brunch.
