SUMMARY:Annual Holiday Tea
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 30th–Annual Holiday Tea \nAfternoon tea is part of The Cliff Dweller’s history and a lovely seasonal treat. Come and enjoy this midday refreshment\, complete with scones\, small cakes\, assorted sweets\, savory finger sandwiches and fine tea. Engage in warm and lively conversation with fellow members and friends over a special cocktail. And thrill at a poem created exclusively for you! \n  \nPoems While You Wait is a collective of poets that bring in their vintage typewriters and produce poetry on demand. Three poets from the collective will engage with with us and\, in a short time\, create a poem for each of us. \nHere’s how it works: Upon entering the Club\, you will give your name to the poets and provide a “topic” for the poem you would like a poet to write. \n(The topic may be specific or abstract\, with as much or as little information as you choose. No topic is too big or too small\, too funny or too sad\, too silly or too serious). While you sip your tea\, the magic will happen. At the close of the event you will be presented with a custom-made\, one-of-a-kind poem to keep for yourself or to give away as a gift! \nMore fun: \nGifted vocalist Jamie O’ Reilly will delight us with her musical stylings. And\, our own Ed Torrez (CD’ 17) brings even more cheer as we gather around the piano to sing old familiar songs. \n2:30pm-Bar Opens \n3pm-Buffet ($36) \nReservations are required: \nreservations@cliff-chicago.org  \nor call 312-922-8080 \nReservations are requested by November 28th

SUMMARY:Mid-Century Modernism: A Personal Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join Joseph Madda as he explores Mid-century Modernism and design via his personal journey through this intriguing period and style.\nAfter depression and World War II\, America emerged the dominant nation.  Unparalleled growth and prosperity followed for a burgeoning middle class\, unprecedented in size.  Veterans on the GI bill went to college\, married sweethearts\, moved to new suburbs\, and birthed lots of babies.  The late 1940’s\, 50’s\, and early 60’s were about abundance\, conformity\, and gradual pushback.  As the 60’s progressed\, this monolith fractured.  The epoch ended in Vietnam\, 70’s oil-supply shocks\, and stagflation. \nA bona fide Baby Boomer\, architect\, art commentator\, and author Joseph Madda lived through these times\, including owning and living in four different Mid-Century Modern homes in Los Angeles and Chicago for over forty years.  Join Joe as he explores Mid-century Modernism and design via his personal journey through this intriguing period and style. \n

SUMMARY:Music Lifts the Soul: A celebration of Augusta Read Thomas & Bernard Rands
DESCRIPTION:The respective work of major music artists Augusta Read Thomas and Bernard Rands is legendary. We are delighted to celebrate\, in one grand event\, each of these highly distinguished composers as Honorary members of the Club. \nA composer featured on a Grammy winning CD by Chanticleer\, a Pulitzer Prize finalist\, and University of Chicago University Professor of Composition\, Augusta Read Thomas’ impressive body of works “embodies unbridled passion and fierce poetry” (American Academy of Arts and Letters) \nThrough more than a hundred published works and many recordings\, Bernard Rands is established as a major figure in contemporary music. Among other things\, his works have won the Pulitzer Prize in Music (1984) and the 1986 Kennedy Center Friedheim Award (1986.) \nAt this event\, music will fill the room. A performance by John Corkill (percussion) will bring to life ENCHANTED INVOCATION by Augusta Read Thomas. And\, just as enthralling\, Phil Pierick (saxophone) will perform Memo 6 by Bernard Rands. \nBut\, there’s more. Bernard Rands will charm us with a talk on “Contemporary Virtuosity.” And Augusta Read Thomas will passionately speak on “Gestalt Webs.” \nWe will enjoy a fine dinner and wine will be poured for a special “Zivio” greeting and toast. There will be a few surprises too! \n  \nMembers and guests are welcome.\n5pm – Cash bar opens\n6pm – Dinner ($60 pp) \nReservations are required:\nreservations@cliff-chicago.org or call 312-922-8080 \nReservations are requested by October 17.

SUMMARY:An Ancient Dream\, An Epic Poem\, and Daring Searches by Intrepid Architects/Archaeologists\, Unearth an Architectural Treasure And Solve a Centuries-Old Mystery: a Lecture by Margery al Chalabi
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting lecture on architecture and archeology.\nThe story starts with a team of archaeologists from the British Museum returning to a site in Iraq eighty years after its initial excavation by the French. \nThose earlier excavations led – eventually – to astonishing finds in both palatial structures and a major library of the world’s first written language – Sumerian – on 100\,000 shards of clay. \nThis latter find precipitated a search for the region’s history and ancient structures – the latter\, a search for several temples called The Eninnu. \nThe search required the archaeologists learn to read a language that had been dead – or altered/modified by generations of conquests and world-wide population movements – over millennia. And\, as an unintended consequence\, discovered the world’s oldest\, most-known\, most-revered\, most-translated piece of literature – The Epic of Gilgamesh. \n5:00 pm – Bar opens; 6:30 pm – Dinner ($40); 7:30 pm – Program \nRSVP by June 5
