DESCRIPTION:The Cliff Dwellers  Celebrated our Honorary Member\, Poet Elise Paschen\nElise Paschen (C Honorary Member ’20)\, an enrolled member of the Osage Nation\, is an important Chicago writer and the author of six poetry collections. Her poems have been published widely to great acclaim. Besides editing or co-editing numerous anthologies such as The Eloquent Poem and the New York Times best-seller Poetry Speaks to Children\, she is co-founder of Poetry in Motion\, a nationwide program that places poetry posters in subway cars and buses. Dr. Paschen teaches in the MFA Writing Program at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. \nThe Cliff Dwellers celebrated Elise Paschen’s impactful creative voice and her distinguished career with an enchanting program\, which included music by Bill Buchholtz\, stories by Dr. Lisa Yun Lee\, and poetry readings by Rachel DeWoskin and Thea Goodman. The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame (Don Evans) partnered with us to ensure a truly dynamic event! \n

Some of our current architect members attended\, but all are were welcome to listen in or join the conversation in what promises to be an exciting addition to the Cliff Dwellers offerings. \nFuture meetings will be held in the Sullivan Room at noon on the second Tuesday of each month. DESCRIPTION:Edith Farnsworth and Her Iconic House \nOne of the most famous residences in modern history\, a glass and steel marvel that seems to float above its site\, the “Edith Farnsworth House” book charts the house’s original design by Mies van der Rohe. The program will discuss the book\, which newly foregrounds the key role of client Edith Farnsworth. Author Michelangelo Sabatino will share his deep expertise on modernist architecture\, along with excerpts of Edith Farnsworth’s unpublished memoir. The book also includes photographs by Hedrich Blessing\, Hiroshi Sugimoto\, and Annie Leibovitz\, and was published in association by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. \nA conversation with architect and AIA Gold Medal recipient Carol Ross Barney\, FAIA\, HASLA\, will follow theh presentation. Valenzi is a scholar of Gilbert and Sullivan\, and of Pirates in particular\, and will share insights\, analysis\, and fun facts in between performances by some of Chicago’s finest up-and-coming operatic voices. \nThe Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company of Chicago was founded in 1960 by Roland Bailey\, Robert Ashenhurst\, and Nancy Lorie. They have been delighting audiences since their first production\, The Gondoliers\, in 1960 at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall. DESCRIPTION:This event will be rescheduled for a later date. \nExecutive Director Bernard Turner will discuss how the Black Belt became the Black Metropolis National Heritage Area and how we are developing a cultural heritage tourist destination. A question and answer period will follow the talk. \nBernard Turner is the executive director of the Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area\, focused on preserving the history and culture of our community.  Author of several books about Chicago and African American History\, including “A New View of Bronzeville” and “Tate and His Historic Dream\,” Turner conducts citywide and neighborhood tours\, and works with schools.  Bernard taught German and Spanish on the secondary level in the Chicago area for several years. \nThe Black Metropolis National Heritage Area contains the Black Metropolis Historic District\, a Chicago landmark since 1997\, consisting of eight historic buildings\, and one monument\, as well as the homes of entrepreneurs\, Civil Rights activists\, cultural\, and scientific icons\, as well as a Civil War Union Army Camp.

Ox-Bow founders and patrons were Cliff Dwellers\, including Thomas Tallmadge and John W. Norton who was a member of the Carl Street Studios with Edgar Miller. \nShannon Stratton has been Ox-Bow’s Executive Director since 2020. Previously she was Chief Curator at The Museum of Arts and Design in New York\, NY. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Stratton holds an MFA in studio and MA in Art History Theory and Criticism. \nAs an artist-built and run school and residency\, Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency is dedicated to the creation and preservation of time and space for arts education\, research\, practice\, and community-building for artists at all stages of their artistic journey. Faculty\, Visiting Artists\, Residents\, staff\, and students live together in community on our campus in Saugatuck\, Michigan\, where they share meals\, social time\, and the exchange of ideas.
