SUMMARY:Songs About Buildings and Moods
DESCRIPTION:“Songs About Buildings and Moods” uses storytelling and performance to create a unique series exploring the connection between music and architecture. What do the buildings we create say about us? How does a musical interpretation change our perception of a building? The series airs on PBS stations around the country. This screening at the club includes several buildings from the second season and offers club members a sneak peek before it airs on PBS\, starting in January. \nThe featured buildings include the Wrigley Building\, the Stony Island Arts Bank\, the Driehaus Museum and Biblioteca Vasconcelos in Mexico City. \nFollowing the presentation there will be a brief discussion and talkback with ACM founder Seth Boustead\, and Cliff Dwellers member architect Trish VanderBeke\, President of the Cliff Dwellers Arts Foundation. \nSeth Boustead is the founder and Executive Director of Access Contemporary Music (ACM)\, which created this series. Mr. Boustead is the creator\, host and Executive Producer of the PBS series Songs About Buildings and Moods. \nACM assembles musicians every week to read through\, record and post music by living composers to their website. The idea is to make musicians accessible to composers and composer’s music accessible to the public. \nBar opens 5 PM\nPresentation of the TV show 6 PM\nDiscussion following the show. \nCost: $20 per person\nReservations are required by December 11th by emailing  reservations@cliff-chicago.org\nor calling 312-922-8080.

SUMMARY:Summer Jazz Night
DESCRIPTION:Lucky Cliff Dwellers experienced an outstanding musical evening as two of the Cliff Dwellers’ favorite Artists-in-Residence took the stage at the Cliff Dweller’s July Jazz Night. \nThaddeus Tukes is an artist on the move — and not just because he’s busy. As one of vanishingly few vibraphonists in the city\, Tukes\, 30\, is among the heirs apparent to Chicago’s straight-ahead jazz community. Thaddeus’ journey from an After School Matters teen to an ASM instructor\, vibraphonist\, educator\, and advocate for music therapy is a testament to the transformative power of music. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and demonstrates the importance of ASM programs in nurturing young talent. \nEmma Dayhuff\, bassist\, has followed her musical passions to places beyond what she imagined from her childhood home on Sourdough Canyon Road in Bozeman\, Montana. She is a graduate of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance in Los Angeles and is a nationally and internationally touring artist.

Raik\, Richard Reeder\, and Robert Emmett Reidy providing the readings\, while Richard Boldrey and Natalie Forough supplied the musical interludes. The production was produced by Richard Reeder. \nUlysses is a modernist novel by the Irish writer James Joyce\, originally published in Paris in 1922.  Its famously-demonstrated stream of consciousness technique\, along with its careful structuring and literary allusions have made it one of the most celebrated novels written in the English language. \nThe date of June 16th\, the setting of Ulysses\, is an annually-celebrated event (especially in Dublin) known as Bloomsday\, which takes it’s name from the novel’s protagonist\, Leopold Bloom.  (For logistical reasons\, our celebration of Bloomsday will take place the day before\, on June 15th.) \nMembers Michele Kurlander\, Joan Pantsios\, Howard A. Raik\, Richard Reeder\, and Robert Emmett Reidy provided the readings\, while Richard Boldrey and Natalie Forough performed musically at Bloomsday 2024\, a celebration of the writings of James Joyce. Richard Reeder produced the event. \nThe performance was dedicated to the memory of Steve Diedrich and Claudia Traudt. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art Deco Society: When the World Went Dry
DESCRIPTION:Prohibition: When America embarked on an experiment that proved to be a spectacular failure. Yet\, the people who lived through it remembered the era as a wonderful time: jazz\, dancing\, flappers\, short skirts\, cocktails\, hot cars\, and Art Deco design. \nIn this illustrated presentation\, by author Joe Gustaitis\, with music by the 1920s specialists Paul Asaro and Erin Riley\, we traveled back to this flamboyant era. We heard the stories\, learned how it all came about and was ultimately repealed. Recipes for cocktails imbibed in 1920s Chicago were shared; we learned how others traveled abroad to find a drink. And we were treated to authentic songs from the period\, many of which were unexpectedly hilarious.

SUMMARY:Music in the Time of Benjamin Marshall (1874-1944)
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Marshall was born on the Southside of Chicago on May 5\,1874. A self-taught architect\, his elegant buildings include the Drake and Blackstone hotels\, the South Shore Country Club (now South Shore Cultural Center)\, the Edgewater Beach Hotel (now demolished)\, and luxury apartments on East Lake Shore Drive. But alongside his talent for design\, Marshall was also known for his colorful personality that attracted royalty\, writers\, artists and countless celebrities to his lavish parties. \nTo celebrate Marshall’s 150th birthday anniversary\, we’re re-creating the glamour and dazzle of the Jazz Age with a music program featuring Très Belle Soprano Trio accompanied by pianist Paul Dykstra. Operatic sopranos Marisa Buchheit\, Kimberly Jones\, and Kirsten Leslie enjoy successful solo careers that have taken them from Carnegie Hall to the Miss America stage to La Scala Opera House in Milan. \nA brief introduction by Jane Lepauw\, founder of the Benjamin Marshall Society\, will set the mood for this jazz-hot evening\, and a lighted birthday cake will add more fun to the celebration. \n  \nMembers and guests are welcome.\n5pm – Cash bar opens\n6pm – Dinner ($57 member / $62  non-member) \n$25 performance only \nReservations are required:\nreservations@cliff-chicago.org or call 312-922-8080 \nReservations are requested by May 6th.

SUMMARY:Music Lifts the Soul: A celebration of Augusta Read Thomas & Bernard Rands
DESCRIPTION:The respective work of major music artists Augusta Read Thomas and Bernard Rands is legendary. We are delighted to celebrate\, in one grand event\, each of these highly distinguished composers as Honorary members of the Club. \nA composer featured on a Grammy winning CD by Chanticleer\, a Pulitzer Prize finalist\, and University of Chicago University Professor of Composition\, Augusta Read Thomas’ impressive body of works “embodies unbridled passion and fierce poetry” (American Academy of Arts and Letters) \nThrough more than a hundred published works and many recordings\, Bernard Rands is established as a major figure in contemporary music. Among other things\, his works have won the Pulitzer Prize in Music (1984) and the 1986 Kennedy Center Friedheim Award (1986.) \nAt this event\, music will fill the room. A performance by John Corkill (percussion) will bring to life ENCHANTED INVOCATION by Augusta Read Thomas. And\, just as enthralling\, Phil Pierick (saxophone) will perform Memo 6 by Bernard Rands. \nBut\, there’s more. Bernard Rands will charm us with a talk on “Contemporary Virtuosity.” And Augusta Read Thomas will passionately speak on “Gestalt Webs.” \nWe will enjoy a fine dinner and wine will be poured for a special “Zivio” greeting and toast. There will be a few surprises too! \n  \nMembers and guests are welcome.\n5pm – Cash bar opens\n6pm – Dinner ($60 pp) \nReservations are required:\nreservations@cliff-chicago.org or call 312-922-8080 \nReservations are requested by October 17.
