SUMMARY:The Uptown\, Chicago's Endangered Movie Palace - A New Book Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The beautiful old Uptown Theatre needs help! That was the message delivered at the Cliff Dwellers the evening of November 5 by Robert Loerzel\, and James (Andy) Pierce\, authors of a new book\, “THE UPTOWN: Chicago’s Endangered Movie Palace.”  Supported by 46th Ward Alderwoman Angela Clay\, they made the case for why this amazingly beautiful old venue deserves financial support for a desperately needed renovation.\nCelebrating the 100th anniversary of the historic Uptown Theatre in Chicago\, a new book\, The UPTOWN\, was released in August of 2025. The presentation took guests back to the theater’s ballyhooed opening in 1920. It was a magical place created by Chicago architects Rapp & Rapp for Balaban & Katz\, one of the nation’s leading theater chains of the time.  The book follows the building through its five decades as a theater\, and its four decades of darkness.

SUMMARY:Grant Park at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:GRANT PARK AT A CROSSROAD \nGrant Park has at least two identities: one as a neighborhood park for the more than 110\,000 residents living Downtown\, and two\, as a regional park hosting a wide array of programs for the City of Chicago and our region.   These identities come into conflict when major events\, like NASCAR and Lollapalooza\, push out local and neighborhood park uses.  Leslie Recht\, CD ’03\, is President of the Grant Park Advisory Council. and Jim Wales\, CD ’21\, is the Council Vice President and also the President of South Loop Neighbors. They outlined the status of Grant Park\, provided some of the ideas for improvements and solicited input from the attendees. \nThe Council formed an art and monument advisory committee which includes several members of Cliff Dwellers. We will discuss some of the art projects that have been reviewed by that advisory committee and the process that was used for this review. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Bloomsday at the Cliff Dwellers
DESCRIPTION:The illustration of James Joyce was done by Leonid Osseny. Mr. Osseny has done extensive illustrations pertaining to Ulysses. His work was exhibited at the 19th International James Joyce Symposium in Dublin\, the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago\, and at the Evanston Public Library. Reproduced with permission. \nThe 2024 program of James Joyce readings and accompanying musical performance in celebration of Bloomsday and James Joyce.  was presented by Cliff Dwellers members Michele Kurlander\, Joan Pantsios\, Howard A. Raik\, Richard Reeder\, and Robert Emmett Reidy providing the readings\, while Richard Boldrey and Natalie Forough supplied the musical interludes. The production was produced by Richard Reeder. \nUlysses is a modernist novel by the Irish writer James Joyce\, originally published in Paris in 1922.  Its famously-demonstrated stream of consciousness technique\, along with its careful structuring and literary allusions have made it one of the most celebrated novels written in the English language. \nThe date of June 16th\, the setting of Ulysses\, is an annually-celebrated event (especially in Dublin) known as Bloomsday\, which takes it’s name from the novel’s protagonist\, Leopold Bloom.  (For logistical reasons\, our celebration of Bloomsday will take place the day before\, on June 15th.) \nMembers Michele Kurlander\, Joan Pantsios\, Howard A. Raik\, Richard Reeder\, and Robert Emmett Reidy provided the readings\, while Richard Boldrey and Natalie Forough performed musically at Bloomsday 2024\, a celebration of the writings of James Joyce. Richard Reeder produced the event. \nThe performance was dedicated to the memory of Steve Diedrich and Claudia Traudt. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art Deco Society: When the World Went Dry
DESCRIPTION:Prohibition: When America embarked on an experiment that proved to be a spectacular failure. Yet\, the people who lived through it remembered the era as a wonderful time: jazz\, dancing\, flappers\, short skirts\, cocktails\, hot cars\, and Art Deco design. \nIn this illustrated presentation\, by author Joe Gustaitis\, with music by the 1920s specialists Paul Asaro and Erin Riley\, we traveled back to this flamboyant era. We heard the stories\, learned how it all came about and was ultimately repealed. Recipes for cocktails imbibed in 1920s Chicago were shared; we learned how others traveled abroad to find a drink. And we were treated to authentic songs from the period\, many of which were unexpectedly hilarious.

Gordon & David Ramsay\nPrometheus Books\, May 2023 \nOn June 6\, 2024\, our own member and treasurer Ed Gordon took the podium to talk about his new book. \nDivided on D-Day: How Leadership Failures Threatened the Normandy Invasion presents a cogent analysis of the myriad obstacles the Allied leaders faced in the planning and execution of the Normandy campaign. \nEd discussed the conflicting egos\, personal and national rivalries\, and professional abilities of the major Allied commanders\, and contends that their lack of cooperation and bad decisions lengthened the war\, increased casualties\, and allowed the later Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. \nEdward E Gordon is an internationally recognized historian\, speaker\, researcher\, and author.  For 20 years Dr. Gordon taught at DePaul\, Loyola\, and Northwestern Universities in Chicago. SUMMARY:Mid-Century Modernism: A Personal Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join Joseph Madda as he explores Mid-century Modernism and design via his personal journey through this intriguing period and style.\nAfter depression and World War II\, America emerged the dominant nation.  Unparalleled growth and prosperity followed for a burgeoning middle class\, unprecedented in size.  Veterans on the GI bill went to college\, married sweethearts\, moved to new suburbs\, and birthed lots of babies.  The late 1940’s\, 50’s\, and early 60’s were about abundance\, conformity\, and gradual pushback.  As the 60’s progressed\, this monolith fractured.  The epoch ended in Vietnam\, 70’s oil-supply shocks\, and stagflation. \nA bona fide Baby Boomer\, architect\, art commentator\, and author Joseph Madda lived through these times\, including owning and living in four different Mid-Century Modern homes in Los Angeles and Chicago for over forty years.  Join Joe as he explores Mid-century Modernism and design via his personal journey through this intriguing period and style. \n

SUMMARY:An Ancient Dream\, An Epic Poem\, and Daring Searches by Intrepid Architects/Archaeologists\, Unearth an Architectural Treasure And Solve a Centuries-Old Mystery: a Lecture by Margery al Chalabi
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting lecture on architecture and archeology.\nThe story starts with a team of archaeologists from the British Museum returning to a site in Iraq eighty years after its initial excavation by the French. \nThose earlier excavations led – eventually – to astonishing finds in both palatial structures and a major library of the world’s first written language – Sumerian – on 100\,000 shards of clay. \nThis latter find precipitated a search for the region’s history and ancient structures – the latter\, a search for several temples called The Eninnu. \nThe search required the archaeologists learn to read a language that had been dead – or altered/modified by generations of conquests and world-wide population movements – over millennia. And\, as an unintended consequence\, discovered the world’s oldest\, most-known\, most-revered\, most-translated piece of literature – The Epic of Gilgamesh. \n5:00 pm – Bar opens; 6:30 pm – Dinner ($40); 7:30 pm – Program \nRSVP by June 5

SUMMARY:Breaking the Illusion of Consensus: American Esoterica\, Microsocieties\, & Outsider Literature (An "Artist-in-Residence" program)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday evening\, June 23rd\, for a program presented by Artist-in-Residence Logan Berry.\n“It’s hard to be an atheist in such an age\, so why not make up your own religion?” asks poet Kathleen Rooney in her thought-provoking new poetry collection Where Are the Snows. Three prolific writers will engage in a roundtable discussion about Rooney’s question via the spiritual dimensions of their books and writing practices\, as well as how they relate (or don’t) to our time of fractured consensus reality. At this program\, presented by AIR and writer Logan Berry\, we’ll welcome Chicago-based authors Maryse Meijer (Heartbreaker\, Rag\, The Seventh Mansion) and Kathleen Rooney (Where Are the Snows\, Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey\, Lilian Boxfish Takes a Walk)\, together with NYC-based author David Leo Rice (The New House\, Drifters\, A Room in Dodge City).
