DESCRIPTION:Lucky Cliff Dwellers experienced an outstanding musical evening as two of the Cliff Dwellers’ favorite Artists-in-Residence took the stage at the Cliff Dweller’s July Jazz Night. \nThaddeus Tukes is an artist on the move — and not just because he’s busy. As one of vanishingly few vibraphonists in the city\, Tukes\, 30\, is among the heirs apparent to Chicago’s straight-ahead jazz community. Thaddeus’ journey from an After School Matters teen to an ASM instructor\, vibraphonist\, educator\, and advocate for music therapy is a testament to the transformative power of music. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and demonstrates the importance of ASM programs in nurturing young talent. \nEmma Dayhuff\, bassist\, has followed her musical passions to places beyond what she imagined from her childhood home on Sourdough Canyon Road in Bozeman\, Montana. She is a graduate of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance in Los Angeles and is a nationally and internationally touring artist.

In his high school years\, he showcased his exceptional musical talent as a percussionist in the Wind Symphony\, earning the distinguished honor of being selected for the 2021 Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Band. Not limiting himself to one instrument\, Brandon also displayed his dexterity on the piano as a key contributor to the jazz band. Brandon’s musical excellence was recognized in his senior year with the 2023 John Philip Sousa Band Award. Furthermore\, he was acclaimed as an outstanding piano soloist in the Big Band and Combos at the 2023 Jazz in the Chi Regional High School Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Festival. Brandon’s musical odyssey is a testament to his talent\, dedication\, and unyielding passion for the art of jazz and percussion. The future of jazz is in great hands with the continued accomplishments of this next generation performer. The piece is an ambient audio installation that will take place in the Cliff Dwellers elevator on the evening of 10/6. With no clear beginning or end\, subtle sounds\, foreign yet vaguely familiar to the elevator\, will fill its space. Shallow is a professor of sound and art at the University of Chicago\, and Dorkin holds a doctorate in poetics.
